In this lesson you you will familiarize with the prepositions on place "ÜSTÜNDE" and "ÜZERİNDE". Sometimes the are interchangeable.
They stem from the prepositions " ÜST" and "ÜZERİ".
As the first means "on, upon" ,expressing a physical contact, the second means "over" as there is no contact between or among the objects.

You may notice that here both prepositions in this drill are subject to double declension : LOCATIVE CASE (the suffix -DE is attached) and GENITIVE CASE (suffixes -ÜN and -İN attached).

Look at this pattern: MASANIN ÜSTÜNDE that means "on the table".
- Masanın üstünde bir kitap var There is a book on the table
-Sinemanın üstünde bir kulüp var mı? There is a club upon the sinema?
-Defterin üstünde bir kalem yok There are no pens on the book
-Masanın üstünde ne var? What is on the table?
-Masanın üstünde bir büyük defter var There is a big exercise-book on the table.
-Kitabın üstünde bir kalem var mı? Is there a pen on the book?
-Evet, küçük bir kalem var Yes, tehre is a small pen.
-Nehrin üstünde (üzerinde) bir köprü var mı? Is there a bridge over the river?
-Şehrin üstünde (üzerinde) bir bulut var mı? Is there a cloud over the city?
-Evet çok büyük bir bulut var Yes, there is a big cloud.

Sinemadın üstunde is a bad example because in English we say the club is above the cinema, not on it
